The Spring Lecture Meeting was held on Saturday 15th March. Many thanks to our speaker, Dr Avi Raz, an associate member of the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Oxford University. His talk was entitled A historian revisits his own past: the Arab-Israel conflict in the aftermath of the 1967 war. It was fascinating to hear about this from the perspective of one so closely involved, and helped us to understand the current situation too.
Our Summer Outing to West Wycombe Park took place on Thursday 12th June. We gathered at a local pub, The George and Dragon, for a tasty two-course lunch before moving along the road to the Park, where we had a guided tour of some of the State Rooms of the house, home to the Dashwood family. There was then the opportunity to wander round the beautiful grounds, especially admiring the immaculately maintained lawns.
Our Autumn Lecture Meeting was held on Saturday 22nd November. Our Speaker, Sir David Madden, gave a fascinating talk based on his diplomatic experience working in and with countries and places on the brink of break-up (former Yugoslavia), those seriously divided (Berlin, Cyprus, Bosnia), and those where regional tensions run high (South-Eastern Europe). The talk was preceded by our Annual General Meeting.
A number of members and guests met for a delicious Winter Lunch at The Plough in Wolvercote on Wednesday 3rd December.
